Taraba Government Suspends Mining Activities Over Security Concerns

The Taraba State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all mining activities across the state following security concerns that could threaten the prevailing peace and stability in the region.

The directive was announced on Friday in a statement issued on behalf of Governor Agbu Kefas by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Gebon Timothy Kataps.

According to the government, the decision was informed by credible security reports indicating the presence of threats capable of undermining the relative peace currently being enjoyed by residents of the state.

As part of measures to address the situation, the government disclosed plans to establish a special task force to oversee security and safety within the mining sector.

The task force, it said, would ensure that mining operations resume only after identified security challenges have been effectively addressed and a safer operational environment has been created.

The state government also directed all local government councils and traditional rulers to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order within their respective jurisdictions.

It warned that any violation of the directive should be promptly reported to the nearest security agency, stressing that offenders would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.

The government further revealed that arrangements had been concluded to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and vigilance requirements aimed at safeguarding mining communities.

Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property, the state government stated that mining activities would only be allowed to resume under a secure, peaceful and properly regulated environment.

Residents were urged to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities that could compromise public safety.

The suspension takes immediate effect.
