Senate Cuts Recess Short, Convenes Emergency Session Over Worsening Insecurity
The Senate has summoned lawmakers for an emergency sitting on June 23 to deliberate on Nigeria’s worsening security situation and other pressing national concerns requiring immediate legislative intervention.
In a notice dated June 15 and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Emmanuel Odo, senators were directed to reconvene at the Senate Chamber by 11 a.m. for the special session.
According to the notice, the emergency sitting was convened at the instance of Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, in response to issues deemed critical to the nation’s stability and wellbeing.
“The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention,” the notice stated.
The Senate also expressed regret over any inconvenience the emergency session might cause lawmakers and urged all senators to make the necessary arrangements to attend.
The development effectively shortens the upper legislative chamber’s recess. The Senate had adjourned plenary on June 11 and was originally scheduled to resume legislative activities on July 7.
The decision comes amid mounting concerns over the deteriorating security situation across the country, with several states recently witnessing deadly attacks, kidnappings and other violent crimes that have heightened public anxiety and renewed calls for stronger government action.
The emergency sitting follows a similar move by the House of Representatives, which reconvened on Monday to consider an amendment to the 2025 Appropriation Act aimed at extending the implementation period for the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30.
Political observers say the Senate’s early return underscores the growing urgency of addressing security challenges confronting the nation and the need for coordinated legislative measures to support ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across Nigeria.
