Ram Prices Hit #700 Thousand Ahead of Eid el-Kabir Celebrations as Muslims Grapple With Rising Cost of Sacrificial Animals
As Muslims prepare for the Eid el-Kabir celebration coming up this Wednesday, a survey conducted by NewsRegister has revealed a sharp increase in the prices of sacrificial animals across local markets.
The annual festival, also known as Ileya, is one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, marked by prayers, communal celebrations, and the symbolic sacrifice of animals.
Meanwhile, Interviews with livestock traders showed that the cost of rams, the preferred animal for the Eid sacrifice, now ranges between ₦150,000 and ₦700,000 depending on the size and quality of the animal. While Goats are also selling at higher prices, with costs ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦120,000.
Sellers attributed the hike in prices to insecurity in some parts of the country, rising transportation costs, and the increase in fuel prices, all of which have disrupted supply chains and livestock movement.
Some residents who spoke on the development, said they had already purchased their rams in anticipation of further price increases before the festival; others, however, expressed concern over the economic realities facing many families, noting that they may not be financially capable of buying a ram this year.
To this end, Islamic clerics and community leaders have advised Muslims not to incur debts simply to purchase sacrificial animals, stressing that the true essence of Eid el-Kabir goes beyond the slaughtering of rams.
