Falconets Qualify for 2026 U-20 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s Falconets have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after surviving a tense second-leg encounter against Malawi in Lilongwe to advance 3-2 on aggregate.
The result extends Nigeria’s remarkable record of qualifying for every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2002.
The Falconets travelled to Malawi holding a two-goal advantage from the first leg in Ikenne, where an own goal by Malawian defender Maureen Kenneth and a strike from Kindness Ifeanyi handed Nigeria a 2-0 victory.
However, the return leg at the Bingu National Stadium proved far more challenging as the Young Scorchers mounted a spirited comeback attempt before Nigeria eventually held firm to book their place at the World Cup.
Malawi made a fast start, with Faith Chimzimu opening the scoring in the ninth minute to ignite the home supporters. Nigeria nearly restored their aggregate cushion moments later when Ifeanyi delivered a dangerous cross into the box, but Favour Nkwocha’s powerful effort crashed against the woodwork.
The hosts carried their 1-0 lead into the break and intensified the pressure after halftime. Chimzimu struck again in the 55th minute to complete her brace and level the aggregate score at 2-2, placing Nigeria’s flawless qualification record under serious threat.
Falconets coach Moses Aduku responded with tactical changes, and his substitutions paid off in the 62nd minute when Precious Oscar capitalised on a defensive error. The substitute pressed aggressively to win possession before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper to restore Nigeria’s aggregate advantage and silence the home crowd.
Nigeria defended resolutely for the remainder of the encounter to secure a hard-fought 3-2 aggregate victory.
The Falconets will now make their 12th appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, having featured in every edition since Canada hosted the maiden tournament in 2002.
Nigeria’s best performances at the competition came in Germany 2010 and Canada 2014, where the Falconets finished as runners-up. The team will now aim to win the title for the first time when the tournament takes place in Poland from September 5 to 27, 2026.
The Nigerian delegation in Malawi also expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Malawi, Ambassador Ibrahim Miringa, and staff of the Nigerian mission for their support and hospitality throughout the trip.
