Oyo Government Cancels Once-Daily Sanitation Operations, Recruits 930 Trained Ad-Hoc Staff For Twice A Day Cleanup
The Oyo State Government has rolled out a comprehensive overhaul of its environmental sanitation system, introducing new measures aimed at ensuring cleaner public spaces and improving waste management practices across the state.
The reforms signal a shift toward a more structured and consistent approach to sanitation, with increased manpower and upgraded infrastructure.
At the heart of the initiative is a renewed commitment to efficiency and accountability, as the government intensifies monitoring and enforcement while also providing the necessary tools to support proper waste disposal.
To this end, the State Government has approved a new twice-daily sanitation schedule as part of a sweeping reform to improve cleanliness and environmental standards across the state.
Under the new arrangement, Environmental Vanguards, sweepers, and waste packers will now operate at sunrise and sunset each day, replacing the previous once-daily routine.
The move is aimed at ensuring that roads, markets, and other public spaces remain clean throughout the day.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Honorable Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the Environment House, Agodi, Ibadan.
He noted that the restructuring will enhance efficiency, monitoring, and compliance.
In addition to the new work schedule, the government has commenced the distribution of modern waste segregation bins to promote proper waste disposal.
The bins, designed for sorting organic, plastic, glass, and other waste types, are being rolled out starting with government offices and will be extended to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in phases.
To further strengthen waste management efforts, the state has also deployed new compactor trucks to improve refuse evacuation and ensure timely collection of waste across the state.
Supporting these initiatives is the re-engagement of 930 sanitation workers, who have been absorbed into the Ministry’s Environmental Adopt Programme following the approval of Governor Seyi Makinde.
Aderinto emphasized that the combined measures enhanced workforce deployment, improved waste sorting systems, and increased evacuation capacity will significantly boost environmental sanitation and promote a cleaner, healthier Oyo State.
