NRC Raises Alarm Over Repeated Attacks on Trains Along Abuja–Kaduna Corridor
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised fresh concerns over a series of attacks on its train operations along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor following a recent incident involving a moving train.
The corporation said suspected residents pelted a train with stones around kilometre 177 along the Abuja Kaduna Highway, damaging the windscreen of the lead locomotive.
According to a statement issued by NRC spokesperson, Callistus Unyimadu, the attack occurred when a group of unidentified individuals gathered near the rail track and hurled stones at the passing train.
Unyimadu described the development as alarming, noting that similar incidents have been recorded in recent weeks, particularly in communities such as Gidan Busa and Sarki Gora Village in the Kakau District of Chikun Local Government Area.
“About six attacks have been documented along the corridor within the past two weeks, posing significant threats to passenger safety, railway personnel, and critical infrastructure,” the statement said.
The NRC warned that the repeated attacks are not only dangerous but also amount to economic sabotage, with the potential to disrupt national transportation and undermine government investments in the railway sector.
Despite the incidents, the corporation noted that train services have continued under heightened safety measures, with staff maintaining strict vigilance to ensure passenger safety.
The agency added that it is working closely with security operatives, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen surveillance, identify those responsible, and bring perpetrators to justice.
The NRC also urged communities living along railway lines to support efforts to protect rail infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities and discouraging acts of vandalism.
It warned that continued attacks could disrupt service delivery if urgent and collective action is not taken.
