Vandalism of Roadside Trees Sparks Concern in Kano Amid Rising Political Tensions
Suspected vandals have destroyed newly planted roadside trees along the route leading to the Government House in Nassarawa, Kano, raising both environmental and political concerns.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, targeted trees planted by the state government months ago as part of an urban beautification and climate sustainability initiative.
The affected stretch, located in the heart of the Kano metropolis, had recently undergone greening efforts aimed at improving air quality, enhancing urban aesthetics, and promoting environmental resilience.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner for Environment, Dahir Hashim, shared images of the damaged trees on his official Facebook page.
Expressing frustration over the destruction, Hashim described tree cultivation as a painstaking and time intensive process.
“Nurturing trees is one of the most difficult tasks. Despite the effort we invested in raising these trees for over a year, some miscreants have destroyed them,” he said.
Although no group has claimed responsibility, the incident comes amid heightened political activity in the state. Observers believe the act may not be entirely unconnected to growing tensions within and between political groups in Kano, though no direct evidence has been established.
As of the time of filing this report, the police have yet to issue an official statement identifying suspects or confirming whether an investigation has commenced.
Environmental advocates have warned that the destruction undermines ongoing efforts to improve urban infrastructure and address climate challenges through tree planting initiatives.
They also described the act as a setback to the state’s broader strategy to enhance public spaces, promote ecological balance, and create a healthier urban environment.
Authorities are expected to strengthen surveillance measures and deepen community engagement to prevent further acts of vandalism and safeguard public assets.
