Woman accused of assaulting 15-year-old daughter remanded

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has confirmed that a woman accused of assaulting her 15-year-old daughter in the Ipaja area of Lagos State has been remanded in custody.

The development followed swift intervention by state authorities after a viral video of the incident surfaced online.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, the agency said it immediately activated the state’s emergency response protocol after the disturbing footage emerged on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

According to the DSVA, the teenager was rescued by the Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development and taken to a shelter, where she is currently receiving care and support services.

“The survivor was swiftly rescued by the Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development and has been placed in a shelter, where she is currently receiving appropriate care and support services,” the statement read.

The agency said the suspect was initially arrested by officers of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and taken to Ipaja Police Station before the case was transferred to the Family Support Unit of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

“The matter was subsequently escalated to the Family Support Unit, Ipaja Division of the Lagos State Police Command for thorough investigation,” the agency added.

Following the investigation, the suspect was charged to court on Thursday, April 30, 2026, and arraigned before Court 23 of the Samuel Ilori Magistrate Court in Ogba, Lagos.

She was subsequently remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“The case was charged to court on Thursday, 30th April 2026, and heard at Court 23, Samuel Ilori Magistrate Court, Ogba, Lagos, while the defendant has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the outcome of the Director of Public Prosecutions’ advice,” the statement said.

The DSVA commended members of the public and mandated reporters whose prompt actions helped ensure the safety of the teenager and accelerated the legal process.

It also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s zero-tolerance policy on child abuse.

“The Lagos State Government remains fully committed to its zero-tolerance stance on all forms of child abuse and will continue to ensure that survivors are protected while perpetrators are held accountable under the law,” the agency stated.

The case followed widespread outrage after a video circulated on social media allegedly showing the woman attacking her daughter at a residence on Tashoro Street, near Ipaja.

Authorities say the matter is now before the court as the state continues efforts to strengthen child protection enforcement and prosecute abuse-related offences.
