Just In: Sanwo-Olu Endorses Hamzat for Lagos Governor
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement came after a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat reportedly informed members of the State Executive Council and key party leaders of his intention to contest for the state’s top seat.
Among those present were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and former senator Ganiyu Solomon.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as unanimous, saying Hamzat possesses the experience, competence, and leadership qualities needed to govern Lagos.
“We just received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders in the state to formally inform us of his intention to contest for the governorship position,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“It was a unanimous position among all of us that the Deputy Governor is fit and well-prepared for this responsibility. He is a man who understands the workings of government and knows the structure of the house.”
The governor praised Hamzat for his dedication over the past seven years, citing his integrity, loyalty, commitment, and unwavering support.
“He has worked with me at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support. I feel personally honoured that he considered it important to inform me first,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, whom he credited for identifying both leaders and creating the path that brought them together politically.
“We thank our father and leader, Mr President, who saw the vision long ago, and today that vision is already being manifested,” he said.
Describing Hamzat as fully prepared for leadership, Sanwo-Olu stated that the deputy governor had been ready for the role from the beginning.
“This is a deputy governor who has been worthy of becoming governor from day one. He has been built for this job, and we believe he deserves the opportunity to lead this state,” he said.
The governor noted that the endorsement followed consultations with party leaders and government officials, adding that the meeting reflected unity within the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos State.
The development signals an early political alignment within the APC as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.
