Sitting Governors Should Lose Their Seats Once Defected__ Political Stakeholders

Rising Political Defections in Nigeria Stir Concerns Over Democratic Integrity

The growing wave of political defections across Nigeria is sparking widespread debate over its implications for the country’s democracy.

In recent months, several elected officials at both state and federal levels have switched political parties after winning mandates at the polls. Many cite internal party crises, ideological differences, and shifting political alliances as reasons for their decisions.

Political stakeholders and analysts, however, point to deeper structural issues such as the absence of firm political ideology, corruption, and constitutional loopholes as key drivers of these defections.

They argue that when elected officials abandon the platforms on which they were elected without seeking fresh mandates from their constituents, it undermines public trust and weakens confidence in the democratic system.

In response, stakeholders are calling for stricter constitutional provisions requiring politicians particularly sitting governors to either remain within their parties or forfeit their positions.

As political alignments continue to shift, many Nigerians are left questioning whether these defections truly enhance democratic choice or simply erode the bond between elected leaders and the electorate.
