Nigeria Signs Deal with UK to Receive Deported Asylum Seekers, Criminals

Nigeria has signed a new agreement with the United Kingdom (UK) that will allow Britain to deport thousands of failed asylum seekers and convicted criminals to the West African country.

The deal marks a significant development in migration and security cooperation between both nations, and is expected to shape future discussions around border control and international asylum policies.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, during President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the UK.

The UK Home Office confirmed the development on Thursday, describing it as part of broader efforts to tackle irregular migration and strengthen bilateral relations.

Under the arrangement, individuals who have exhausted their asylum claims in the UK, as well as certain categories of foreign criminals, may be repatriated to Nigeria.

While full details of the implementation framework have not yet been made public, officials say the deal will include provisions to ensure compliance with international human rights standards and existing legal processes.

The development is likely to generate mixed reactions, particularly among human rights advocates and migration policy experts, who have often raised concerns about the treatment and reintegration of deportees.

More information is expected to emerge in the coming days as both governments release further details on the scope and operational guidelines of the agreement.
