FIFA fines Nigeria, DR Congo over fans’ misconduct at World Cup playoff
Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) have been sanctioned by FIFA following incidents involving supporters during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match in November.
In its latest disciplinary report, FIFA said both national football bodies breached its disciplinary code due to the behaviour of their fans during the African World Cup playoff final, which DR Congo eventually won on penalties.
According to the ruling, Nigerian supporters threw objects onto the pitch during the match. FIFA said the action violated Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
As a result, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was fined 1,000 Swiss francs.
The Congolese Football Association received a heavier sanction after FIFA determined that its supporters used laser pointers during the game, an offence that violates Article 17.2.d of the disciplinary code. The federation was consequently fined 5,000 Swiss francs.
FIFA noted that each decision was reached based on the specific merits and circumstances of the cases, adding that the rulings remain subject to appeal.
However, the disciplinary report did not address Nigeria’s protest regarding the alleged fielding of ineligible players by DR Congo — an issue the NFF reportedly raised after the match.
The NFF had filed a petition with FIFA accusing the Congolese FA of misrepresenting the eligibility status of some players, claiming their participation contravened the country’s citizenship laws.
The Nigerian federation further alleged that some of the “fraudulently registered” players featured for DR Congo during the playoffs.
FIFA has yet to issue a ruling on the matter.
Meanwhile, DR Congo has already announced its squad for the intercontinental playoffs, scheduled for later this month. The team will face the winner of the Jamaica vs New Caledonia clash, with the victor securing one of the final spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
