He Who Wants Me Dead, Will Die First: Veteran Gospel Icon, Deborah Fasoyin ‘Odun Nlo Sopin’, Alive as Family Debunks Death Rumours
The family of veteran Nigerian gospel singer and evangelist, Deborah Adebola Fasoyin, has dismissed widespread social media reports claiming she had died, describing the information as false and misleading.
Rumours of the singer’s death began circulating early Monday, sparking concern among fans and members of the Nigerian gospel music community. Several posts online alleged that the revered choir leader had passed away at the age of 86.
However, a family source who spoke to the media clarified that the reports were completely unfounded. According to the source, Fasoyin is alive and in good health.
“The news is entirely fake and baseless. Mama is hale, hearty and healthy. There is no truth to the rumours being spread,” the source said, urging the public to disregard the claims.
Fasoyin is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of indigenous Yoruba gospel music. She rose to national prominence as the leader of the Good Women Choir of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Ibadan, a group that became famous for its spiritual hymns and traditional gospel compositions.
Born on March 1, 1940, in Oyo Town, Fasoyin developed an early passion for music after joining a church choir as a child. Over the decades, she helped transform the CAC Good Women Choir into a nationally recognized ensemble with numerous recordings and performances across Nigeria.
One of the choir’s most famous songs, “Odun Nlo Sopin,” became a cultural anthem in many Nigerian homes, especially during end-of-year celebrations. The choir has released more than 25 albums, solidifying Fasoyin’s reputation as a major figure in Nigerian gospel music history.
Despite her age, Fasoyin remains an influential voice in Christian ministry and continues to inspire younger gospel musicians and worship leaders across the country.
Her family has appealed to the public to verify information before sharing it online and urged fans to continue praying for the veteran singer.
“Mama is doing well,” the source reiterated. “There is no cause for alarm.”
