Breaking: Oyo CP Orders Re-arrest of Suspect Illegally Released in Jobele by Police Officers, Redeploys DPO
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Femi Haruna, has ordered the immediate re-arrest of a suspect allegedly unlawfully released by an officer attached to the Jobele Divisional Police Headquarters, as part of efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigation.
The directive was issued during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Oyo State Police Command at its headquarters in Eleyele on Thursday.
The meeting was held to address concerns arising from a recent incident involving personnel of the Jobele Divisional Police Headquarters.
To ensure an unbiased investigation into the matter, the commissioner also ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the division.
Haruna said the suspect linked to the incident must be re-arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, stressing that due process would be strictly followed.
The meeting brought together representatives from the four local government areas within Oyo town, including political leaders, community representatives, youth leaders and student union officials.
Those present included a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Atiba Constituency, Hon. Oyekola; Hon. Olorunpoto Cephas Rahman; Hon. Prince Deji Oparinde; the Chairman of Jobele Community, Dr. S. A. Ojediran; a representative of the Jobele Traditional Council of Chiefs; and the Students’ Union Government President of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, Lawal Gbolahan.
During the deliberations, community representatives expressed dissatisfaction with the alleged unprofessional conduct of some personnel attached to the Jobele Divisional Headquarters. However, they commended the police command for its swift intervention and the disciplinary steps already taken by the commissioner.
Responding, Haruna assured the stakeholders of a transparent and thorough investigation into the incident. He disclosed that the DPO had already been issued a query, while other officers involved had been detained and subjected to internal disciplinary procedures pending the outcome of the investigation.
He further directed that the investigation be handled by the Nigeria Police Force X-Squad to ensure professional oversight, while additional tactical teams have been deployed to strengthen security coverage across Oyo town and surrounding communities.
The police commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to justice and accountability, noting that anyone found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with the law and police regulations.
He also urged residents of Oyo town and its environs to continue cooperating with the police by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and enhance public safety.
