Explosion Hits US Embassy in Oslo Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
An explosion struck the United States embassy in Oslo, Norway, early Sunday morning, causing what authorities described as minor material damage, according to local police.
The incident comes at a time of heightened security concerns at US embassies and consulates worldwide, following escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
In recent days, several US diplomatic facilities in Gulf countries hosting American troops have reportedly been targeted by Iranian retaliatory strikes, including locations in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
In a statement addressing the Oslo blast, local police said the cause of the explosion was not immediately known.
Authorities said the blast occurred at around 1:00 a.m. local time, affecting the entrance to the embassy’s consular section.
Police confirmed that investigators were examining the scene and had deployed additional resources in a search for one or more potential perpetrators.
“Police view such incidents in public spaces as very serious, and we are investigating the case with substantial resources and high priority,” the statement said.
Michael Dellemyr, the police commander, told local television stations that officials would not disclose further details about the nature of the damage or the device involved.
“We will not comment on anything related to the type of damage, what has exploded, or similar details beyond the fact that there has been an explosion,” he said.
Dellemyr added that although the investigation was still in its early stages, police have a preliminary understanding of what may have caused the blast.
“It may have been carried out by someone,” he said, noting that investigators were interviewing witnesses to gather more information about the incident.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests.
