Governor Makinde Inspects Runway Lighting at Ibadan Airport as International Upgrade Progresses

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has inspected the newly installed runway lighting system at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, describing the development as another step toward transforming the facility into an international airport.

In a statement posted on his verified social media platforms after the late-night inspection, governor Makinde said the lighting system forms a crucial part of the ongoing infrastructure upgrade at the airport.

“Last night, we inspected the lighting system installed on the new runway of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan. This is part of the work being done to upgrade the airport to an international one,” the governor said.

The installation of modern airfield lighting is expected to significantly improve operational safety by enabling aircraft to land and take off at night and during periods of low visibility.

Reports have it that the lighting upgrade is one of several improvements being implemented to ensure the airport meets international aviation standards.

The airport modernization project also includes extending the runway from about 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres and widening it from 45 metres to 60 metres to accommodate larger, wide-body aircraft used for international flights. Additional work includes upgrades to taxiways, apron facilities and emergency response infrastructure.

When completed, the upgrade is expected to position Ibadan as a major aviation gateway in southwestern Nigeria, boosting regional connectivity, encouraging investment and supporting economic growth in Oyo State and beyond.
