‎Sea Giant: Nigerian Navy Ranked Strongest in Africa, 22nd Globally

‎The Nigerian Navy has been ranked the strongest naval force in Africa and 22nd globally in the 2026 Global Firepower (GFP) military strength report.

‎The ranking places Nigeria ahead of other African navies, including those of Egypt and Algeria, based on an assessment of fleet size, capabilities, logistics and overall maritime strength among 145 countries evaluated worldwide.

‎According to the report, Nigeria’s top position on the continent is driven largely by the size of its naval fleet and its strategic maritime responsibilities in the Gulf of Guinea.

‎The country has one of the longest coastlines in West Africa and controls a vast Exclusive Economic Zone that is critical to regional trade, offshore oil production and maritime security.

‎The GFP data shows that the Nigerian Navy operates 152 naval assets, making it the largest fleet in Africa. This includes 132 patrol vessels made up of offshore patrol boats, gunboats, missile boats and fast-attack craft.

‎The fleet also includes one frigate and two mine warfare vessels, enhancing its ability to conduct patrol, surveillance and limited deep-water operations.

‎While the navy does not operate submarines, aircraft carriers, destroyers or corvettes, the report notes that its force structure reflects a strong focus on coastal and littoral operations.

‎This approach aligns with Nigeria’s security needs, particularly the fight against piracy, oil theft, smuggling and illegal fishing in its territorial waters and the wider Gulf of Guinea.

‎In the overall Global Firepower military rankings, Nigeria placed third in Africa behind Egypt and Algeria.

‎However, analysts say the navy’s leading continental position highlights sustained investments in maritime security and underscores Nigeria’s strategic emphasis on protecting its economic interests and maintaining stability along one of Africa’s most important shipping corridors.
