‎Government Promises Reforms as Poor Waste Management Threatens Public Health in Oyo State

By Micheal Oladejo

‎Poor waste management continues to pose serious risks to public health across Oyo State, as residents and environmental experts warn that indiscriminate disposal practices could worsen disease outbreaks and environmental hazards.

‎Residents have expressed growing concern over refuse piled along the water ways, roadsides and gutters across the state, and described it as an eyesore to the environment and an increasing threat to public health.

‎From the open burning of refuse that releases toxic smoke into the atmosphere to the dumping of waste in rivers and public spaces often resulting in flooding; the consequences of poor waste management in Oyo state are becoming increasingly evident.

‎Residents of Ibadan, the state capital, continue to lament the level of environmental pollution in their communities, noting that dirty surroundings encourage the spread of diseases such as cholera, particularly when food is prepared or sold in unhygienic conditions.

‎A cross section of residents, including Olamilekan Olawuwo, Mr. Hammed Abdul-Qudeez, and Mrs. Magret Adebukola, warned that toxic smoke from burning refuse pollutes the air, while dumping waste into waterways frequently leads to flooding during the rainy season.

‎They maintained that living in an unclean environment exposes residents to communicable diseases, especially where basic hygiene standards are not observed.

‎Speaking on the issue, an Environmental Biologist, Mr. Oyelekan Goodness, cautioned against indiscriminate littering of roads and public spaces, describing it as a major contributor to flooding, environmental degradation, and public health risks that ultimately affect the entire society.

‎Mr. Oyelekan emphasized that while government must strengthen environmental regulations and enforcement, citizens also have a responsibility to change harmful attitudes toward waste disposal.

‎Reacting to the concerns, the Oyo State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ademola Aderinto, assured residents that the ministry is prioritizing sustainable solutions to address environmental challenges, with the goal of making Oyo State one of the cleanest and healthiest states in Nigeria.

‎He pledged the government’s commitment to transforming the state’s environmental landscape through effective policy implementation, sustained public enlightenment campaigns, and strict enforcement of environmental laws.

‎As waste management challenges persist, stakeholders are calling for increased public awareness, responsible waste disposal practices, and stronger government action to protect public health and preserve the environment in Oyo State.
