Breaking: President Trump Begins Economic Attack on Canada, Grounds All Canadian Aircraft
United States President, Donald Trump has launched a major economic offensive against Canada, ordering the decertification of Canadian-made aircraft and announcing a 50 per cent tariff on all aircraft sold into the United States.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mr Trump accused Canada of wrongfully and illegally refusing to certify several Gulfstream jet models, including the G500, G600, G700, and G800, a move he said had effectively blocked the sale of American aircraft in the Canadian market.
“Based on the fact that Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 jets, we are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all aircraft made in Canada,” Mr Trump said.
He added that Canada’s certification refusal amounted to a trade barrier designed to shut out American manufacturers, and said the decision to decertify Canadian aircraft would remain in force until Gulfstream receives full approval from Canadian aviation authorities.
Mr Trump further warned that if the situation is not immediately corrected, the United States will impose a 50 per cent tariff on all aircraft imported from Canada, a move that would significantly impact the Canadian aerospace industry, particularly Bombardier, the manufacturer of the Global Express series.
“If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50 per cent tariff on any and all aircraft sold into the United States of America,” he said.
There was no immediate reaction from the Canadian government or Bombardier as of Friday. The development marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the two neighbouring countries and threatens major disruption to cross-border aircraft trade.
