The African Action Congress (AAC) has raised the alarm over an alleged attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his campaign team in Ekiti State, claiming that the politician’s whereabouts remain unknown.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred at about 1pm on Friday while Sowore and members of his campaign team were in the state.
In a statement signed by the spokesperson for the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign, Abdulkareem Musa, the campaign described the development as a serious security concern and called on relevant authorities to urgently investigate the incident.
The campaign urged the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and ensure Sowore’s safety.
It demanded an immediate security assessment, appropriate protective measures and a thorough investigation, warning that authorities must not wait for a tragedy before taking preventive action.
The statement also stressed that political activities and elections should not be treated as warfare, adding that no political party or actor had the right to resort to violence, intimidation or attacks against citizens exercising their democratic rights.
The campaign further warned that any harm to Sowore or members of his team would be unacceptable, insisting that anyone found responsible for the incident must be held accountable.
In a separate post on Sowore’s official X account, the campaign alleged that the AAC presidential candidate had been kidnapped by armed thugs, adding that his current location was unknown.
“Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!” the post read.
However, the reported attack and alleged abduction had not been independently verified as of the time the report was filed.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identities of the alleged attackers and Sowore’s whereabouts, remained unclear.
Sowore, who is seeking the presidency in the 2027 general election on the platform of the AAC, was in Ekiti State for campaign activities on Thursday.
His absence from proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday was attributed to his campaign engagements in Ekiti by his lawyer.
The court subsequently adjourned his cyberbullying trial until November.
