Flamingos Face Defending Champions North Korea In Crucial World Cup Clash

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will face defending champions Korea DPR on Friday in a crucial Group B encounter at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.

Korea DPR, two-time champions since the tournament began in New Zealand in 2008, have impressed in their opening matches, winning both games to top Group B.

The North Koreans have scored 12 goals and conceded just one, highlighting their attacking strength as they pursue another title.

Nigeria, bronze medallists at the 2022 edition, will be looking to keep their campaign on track after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Poland before bouncing back with a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico.

The Flamingos will need a disciplined and determined performance against the defending champions, with qualification for the knockout stage still within their reach.

A win or draw would guarantee Nigeria’s progress to the Round of 16, while a defeat would leave their qualification hopes dependent on the outcome of the Poland versus Puerto Rico match and the applicable tiebreakers.

The two sides have met twice at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria recorded a 3-2 victory in 2010, while Korea DPR secured a 3-0 win when they met again in 2016.

Coach Akeem Busari and his players will need to remain defensively organised, limit the opposition’s attacking opportunities and convert their chances against a North Korean side that has dominated its group matches.

The encounter is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. local time, corresponding to 4 p.m. Nigerian time, at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé/Rabat.
