JAMB Bars Universities From Issuing Admission Letters, Insists on CAPS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed universities and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria to stop issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that the responsibility rests exclusively with the Board.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, stated this while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

The development was disclosed in the Board’s weekly bulletin released on Monday.

According to Aina, JAMB is the only body statutorily authorised to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

He expressed concern that many candidates often assume admission letters issued directly by institutions are genuine, making them vulnerable to irregularities in the admission process.

The registrar, therefore, urged institutions engaging in the practice to desist, stressing that they also had a responsibility to ensure that candidates obtained the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.

Aina further recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had expressly directed that all admissions into tertiary institutions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

He warned that any admission procedure carried out outside the approved platform was illegal and invalid.

The registrar emphasised that institutions were not permitted to substitute their own admission letters for the official letters issued by JAMB after candidates had accepted their offers of admission through CAPS.

He added that only admissions duly processed and recognised through the platform were accepted for mobilisation into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), among other official purposes.

The directive reinforces JAMB’s position on the centralised admission process and the need for tertiary institutions to comply with established regulations to ensure the validity and proper documentation of candidates’ admissions.
