Mohbad Family Secures IGP Approval for Fresh Probe Into Singer’s Death
The family of late Afrobeats singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has secured the approval of the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
The family disclosed this through its lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026, clarifying that the police re-investigation remains ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a separate suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Ogungbe, the Aloba family submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police on April 14, 2026, while the petition was received at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on May 7.
The lawyer said the petition raised concerns over inconsistencies in the previous investigative process and called for a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
He explained that the petition was subsequently approved by the IGP and forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action, after which it was assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.
Ogungbe said the family’s representative had been invited by the new investigative team and had already engaged with the officers handling the matter.
He added that the family had continued to follow up on the investigation and remained engaged with the new process, providing relevant information and materials to assist the police.
The clarification followed the dismissal, on September 25, 2026, of Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 by the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Ogungbe stressed that the suit was separate from the family’s petition to the police and was neither instituted by the Aloba family nor filed with its authority or consent.
He said the family did not want the dismissal of the suit to be confused with the separate investigative process already commenced following its petition to the Inspector General of Police.
The family maintained that the court’s dismissal of the suit did not terminate the police investigation initiated through its petition, saying it would continue to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant documents, witnesses, information and other materials that could assist the probe.
It also urged the police to conduct the investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, while examining all relevant persons and circumstances connected to the singer’s death.
The lawyers said the family was not seeking to prejudge the outcome of the investigation or engage in “trial by media,” but was seeking a credible, comprehensive and transparent process capable of establishing the facts surrounding Mohbad’s death.
The statement added that the re-investigation remained ongoing, with the Aloba family fully engaged in the process as it continues to pursue what it described as justice for the late singer.
