FG Launches Digital Postcode System, Urges Nigerians to Find, Use New Codes

The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, with the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, urging Nigerians to identify and begin using their new postcodes.

Tijani announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday, describing the system as an important step towards making locations across the country easier to identify and connecting individuals and businesses to services and opportunities.

Operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, the system assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria, providing a precise, Geographic Information System-enabled reference for identifying locations.

The minister said the system would help businesses reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, enable families to provide accurate locations during emergencies and assist government agencies in delivering essential services to communities.

He said accurate postcodes would also form part of the infrastructure required to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy by creating a foundation for more Nigerians to participate in commerce and access opportunities.

Tijani urged Nigerians to search for their postcodes through the official Digital Postcode website and share them with family members, friends and businesses.

The system identifies locations across five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building, with each addressable building assigned a unique code.

NIPOST had earlier said the digital postcode system would support services such as deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce by providing a standard and precise reference for locations across the country.
