‎Oyo Government Says No Going Back on Waste Bin Enforcement, Threatens Sanctions Against Defaulting Collectors

‎The Oyo State Government has declared that there will be no going back on its enforcement of proper waste storage and disposal, warning residents, businesses and waste collectors against violating the state’s environmental regulations.
‎
‎The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Honorable Ademola Aderinto, stated this during an interview with newsmen in Ibadan, stressing that the government would continue to enforce compliance with its waste management regulations across the state.
‎
‎Aderinto said property owners and occupants are expected to provide appropriate facilities for storing refuse and ensure that their waste is handed over to accredited and designated collectors.
‎
‎He then urged residents whose waste collectors failed to provide regular services to report them to the ministry or the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority for appropriate action.
‎
‎The commissioner warned that waste collectors who failed to carry out their responsibilities would face sanctions, including possible revocation of their operating licences. He said the government was committed to ensuring regular evacuation of refuse across the state, stressing that maintaining a clean environment was a collective responsibility involving the government, residents and waste management operators.
‎
‎He disclosed that several residents and businesses had been issued abatement notices during the ongoing enforcement exercise and given 48 hours to correct identified violations.
‎
‎Aderinto warned that those who failed to comply within the stipulated period would face the consequences of the law.
‎
‎The enforcement exercise, according to the commissioner, will continue across other parts of the state as the government intensifies efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment.
‎
‎He called on residents, businesses and waste collectors to play their respective roles in the waste management process, assuring that the government would continue to monitor compliance and take necessary action against violators.
