NANS Convention: Osun Poly Student Dies After Stabbing in Osogbo
A student of the Osun State Polytechnic, Ademiju Ayeni, has died after he was allegedly stabbed during the convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee, Osun State Chapter, in Osogbo, the state capital.
The incident occurred on Saturday during the students’ convention held at the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Osogbo.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the student’s death, stating that Ayeni sustained a stab wound to the chest following a disagreement during the programme.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the disagreement involving Ayeni and some individuals had initially been resolved before participants dispersed.
According to Ojelabi, Ayeni later complained of chest pain, prompting those around him to check on him, only to discover that he had sustained a stab wound. He was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Osogbo, where he was confirmed dead.
The police spokesperson said the deceased’s body had been deposited and that an autopsy would be conducted. He added that the police were aware of the incident but could not confirm whether any suspect had been arrested in connection with the death.
However, the NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, said preliminary reports indicated that the incident was cult-related, adding that the alleged perpetrator had not yet been identified.
Adeyemo said the convention itself had proceeded peacefully before the incident occurred outside the venue, expressing concern over the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
Meanwhile, sources who participated in the convention told DAILY POST that Ayeni was allegedly stabbed by a member of the programme’s security committee while attempting to gain access to the venue.
The matter was reportedly later lodged at the Dada Estate Police Station, while Ayeni’s remains were deposited at the morgue of the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUNTH), pending an autopsy.
