PSC Hands Over 50,000 Newly Recruited Police Constables for Training
The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday formally handed over 50,000 newly recruited police constables to the Nigeria Police Force for training, marking another milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen internal security and boost police manpower nationwide.
The handover ceremony was presided over by the Commissioner I of the PSC, retired Justice Paul Galumje, who represented the commission. According to a statement issued by the commission’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, the recruitment exercise was conducted in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu and relevant statutory provisions governing police recruitment.
Galumje commended President Tinubu for his support throughout the recruitment process and formally presented the successful candidates to the Nigeria Police Force for training at designated police colleges and other approved institutions across the country. He also handed over the comprehensive list of successful recruits, contained in a flash drive, to the police authorities.
Receiving the recruits on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, DIG Isyaku Mohammed, who oversees the Force Training and Development Department, described the recruitment exercise as transparent and credible. He assured that training of the newly recruited constables would commence simultaneously across the country immediately funds for the exercise are released.
“The training will commence nationwide as soon as funds are released,” Mohammed said.
Also speaking, the Director of the Police Service Department in the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ibrahim A. Muhammad, lauded the recruitment process, describing it as transparent, credible and in line with established procedures.
The Secretary to the Police Service Commission, Onyemuche Nnamani, attributed the successful completion of the recruitment exercise to the strong collaboration among relevant stakeholders, expressing satisfaction with the level of coordination that ensured a smooth and credible process.
President Tinubu had on November 26, 2025, declared a nationwide security emergency and approved the recruitment of 50,000 police officers as part of measures to address the country’s security challenges. The Police Service Commission subsequently opened its recruitment portal on December 15, 2025, and later extended the application deadline by two weeks to February 8, 2026, to allow more qualified Nigerians to participate.
The recruitment exercise, which lasted about seven months, is expected to significantly strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force as the newly recruited constables proceed to various training institutions before their eventual deployment across the country.
