Breaking: Osun Government Shuts Newly Commissioned Flyover Over Structural Defect
The Osun State Government has temporarily closed the newly commissioned Lameco Flyover in Osogbo after a structural defect was discovered on the bridge, less than a month after it was inaugurated.
The flyover, commissioned by Governor Ademola Adeleke on July 1, 2026, was partially cordoned off on Friday after a section of the bridge developed visible cracks and a depression, raising concerns about its structural integrity. Videos of the damaged section also circulated widely on social media.
The development has sparked political controversy, with the Accord Party alleging sabotage, while the All Progressives Congress attributed the incident to poor construction and questioned the quality of the project.
Reacting to the development, Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, alleged that the party had received reports suggesting a “disturbing pattern of vandalisation” targeting public infrastructure executed by the Adeleke administration.
Akande claimed the incidents appeared to be part of a calculated attempt by elements within the opposition APC to undermine and discredit the government’s achievements ahead of the forthcoming governorship election. He called on security agencies to investigate the incident and prosecute anyone found culpable, irrespective of political affiliation.
He also urged residents, community leaders and youth groups to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around government infrastructure to security agencies.
However, the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council dismissed the sabotage allegation, insisting that preliminary findings indicated structural deficiencies in the flyover.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Remi Omowaiye, the council said the bridge had developed visible signs of structural failure, including a deep pothole and other distressed sections, describing the situation as a serious threat to motorists.
The APC further argued that the development justified the decision of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a professional engineer, not to attend the commissioning ceremony despite receiving an invitation from the state government.
The opposition party called on Governor Adeleke to keep the flyover closed and immediately commission an independent structural integrity assessment by qualified engineers before reopening it to traffic. It also advised motorists to avoid the bridge until experts certify it safe for use.
At the commissioning ceremony on July 1, Governor Adeleke described the Lameco Flyover as one of his administration’s landmark infrastructure projects. He had also stated that his government completed more than 300 kilometres of intra-city roads across the state, assuring residents that all projects were executed with due process, transparency and fiscal responsibility.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Government had not issued a detailed official statement on the cause of the structural defect or when repair works would commence.
