FG Unveils Consumer Credit Scheme for Laptops, Digital Devices
The Federal Government has launched the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.) Programme, an initiative aimed at providing Nigerians with affordable access to laptops, internet-enabled devices and other digital tools through structured consumer credit.
The scheme, unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja, is being implemented by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. It also aligns with the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme and is expected to deepen digital inclusion, expand access to technology and promote responsible consumer credit across the country.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the initiative as a major step toward building a robust digital economy. He said access to affordable credit would enable individuals and businesses to acquire productive assets, improve their livelihoods and contribute to national development. Tijani commended President Bola Tinubu and CREDICORP for driving the programme, noting that it would stimulate job creation, expand economic opportunities and support the administration’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy.
The programme will initially focus on financing locally assembled laptops, with plans to expand to other internet-enabled devices while prioritising local manufacturing. According to the government, the initiative is designed to support skills development, boost productivity and encourage indigenous technology production.
A highlight of the event was the symbolic presentation of laptops to selected beneficiaries. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CREDICORP, Uzoma Nwagba, announced that the corporation would provide 1,000 locally assembled laptops to eligible beneficiaries under the programme. He disclosed that the rollout began in Abuja, where 77 beneficiaries received their devices, while the remaining laptops would be distributed in phases across other states.
Nwagba said the initiative would equip young Nigerians with the digital tools needed to participate effectively in the technology-driven economy, enhance their learning experience and acquire in-demand digital skills. He added that supporting local assembly of the laptops would also strengthen indigenous manufacturing, create jobs and reduce the country’s dependence on imported technology.
The Federal Government said the C.L.I.C.K.D. Programme reflects its commitment to bridging the digital divide through innovative financing, ensuring that more Nigerians have access to the digital resources needed for education, entrepreneurship, remote work and economic empowerment.
