Injured Wife Begs Authorities Not to Arrest Husband Despite Alleged Abuse
A video showing a visibly injured young woman, reportedly an 18-year-old wife, has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for urgent intervention over allegations of domestic violence.
The footage, shared on Monday by X user @Hybrid_Ola, showed the woman with apparent facial injuries while a man identified as her husband exchanged words with neighbours who confronted him over the alleged abuse.
In the video, bystanders were seen urging the man to leave the young woman alone as he attempted to pull her towards him.
“Madam, leave my wife. You want to drag my wife with me,” the man was heard saying.
One of the neighbours accused him of repeatedly assaulting the woman, saying, “You want to kill her. This girl is just 18 years old. This man is brainwashing her; he is beating her daily.”
A second video later emerged showing the young woman at what appeared to be a hospital alongside human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu. During the interaction, Gwamnishu spoke about efforts to ensure the man’s arrest, but the woman pleaded that no action be taken against her husband.
“Please, I am begging you people. It will be as if it is my fault. The mother does not like me. Let me just carry myself and be going,” she said.
She added, “I am not going back to the marriage again. You people should leave him. I won’t go back to the marriage; don’t arrest him.”
The videos triggered widespread reactions online, with many users expressing concern for the woman’s safety and questioning her reluctance to support legal action against her husband despite her visible injuries.
Following a post by X user @Updateboyx, who tagged the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, the agency responded, saying, “We are on it. Thank you for tagging us.”
The response reassured many social media users who had called for immediate intervention by relevant authorities.
Several commentators condemned the alleged abuse and urged law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter. Others raised concerns about the woman’s age and circumstances surrounding the marriage.
One user, @Memnefer, wrote, “She is so scared. Eighteen years old and married shouldn’t be in the same sentence. Her parents failed her.”
Another, @DeNiike_, commented, “She looks disoriented. I hope she breaks free.”
Similarly, @Cyberhijabitech questioned how an 18-year-old could be subjected to such treatment, arguing that “no man in his right senses will treat his wife badly.”
User @Franklin579003 described the footage as disturbing and urged the woman to leave the marriage, while @InyangBiet called on authorities to verify details surrounding the union, including the woman’s age.
Others linked the incident to broader societal concerns, stressing the need for education, awareness and empowerment for young women to recognise and avoid abusive relationships.
