The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the killing of three security operatives following an attack by armed gunmen on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Plateau State.
The command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, describing the incident as unfortunate and assuring residents that security agencies have taken control of the situation.
According to the police, the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at the premises of the nation’s foremost policy and leadership training institution.
“The Plateau State Police Command, on a very sad note, wishes to confirm the incident that occurred in the early hours of today, June 16, 2026, involving security personnel on duty at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru,” the statement read.
“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident.”
Although the police did not disclose the identities of the victims, reports indicated that the deceased comprised two soldiers and a police officer.
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Bassey Ewah, ordered the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to the area, while patrols and surveillance operations were intensified to prevent further breaches.
The command also announced that a full-scale investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The situation is under control and normal activities have resumed. Investigation is ongoing. The command urges members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses,” the statement added.
Earlier, NIPSS had confirmed the occurrence of what it described as a “security incident” around the institute but refrained from providing details, citing ongoing investigations.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Osime Samuel, the institute said the situation was swiftly contained through the coordinated response of security personnel and relevant agencies.
“The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, wishes to inform the public that a security incident occurred in the vicinity of the Institute in the early hours of today,” the statement said.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.”
The institute assured participants, staff, residents, and stakeholders that there was no threat to lives or facilities within the institution, noting that normal academic and administrative activities were continuing uninterrupted.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” it added.
NIPSS cautioned against speculation, stressing that it would be premature to comment on the nature or outcome of the incident while investigations remain ongoing.
“The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms,” the statement noted.
The institute added that it is collaborating closely with security agencies and other relevant authorities and will provide verified information as soon as investigations progress.
NIPSS Kuru is Nigeria’s premier policy and strategic studies institution, renowned for training senior public officials, military officers, and leaders across various sectors of national life.
