BREAKING: INEC Moves to Halt Enforcement of Judgment Ordering ADC, Accord Deregistration
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja, seeking a stay of execution of a Federal High Court judgment that ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.
The move comes barely hours after Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court delivered a ruling directing the deregistration of the affected parties for allegedly failing to satisfy the conditions required for retaining their registration.
The parties affected by the judgment are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
By filing an appeal and seeking a stay of execution, INEC is asking the appellate court to suspend the enforcement of the judgment pending the determination of its appeal against the ruling.
The development has generated significant interest within political circles, given the implications of the judgment on the affected parties and the country’s electoral landscape.
More details are expected as the appellate court considers INEC’s application.
