Tinubu to Address National Assembly on Democracy Day
President Bola Tinubu is set to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) charged with organising the national celebration.
The committee was inaugurated in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who described the presidential address as one of the major highlights of the commemoration.
Akume said Democracy Day remains a significant occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists and citizens who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose annulled election has become a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to the SGF, the anniversary also provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase its efforts at strengthening democratic institutions, deepening good governance and advancing national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
He urged members of the committee to begin work immediately, stressing that preparations must be completed ahead of the celebration.
Akume added that this year’s Democracy Day activities would reflect the mood and aspirations of Nigerians while highlighting the government’s commitment to prudent resource management.
Activities marking the anniversary will commence with a world press conference on June 4, followed by a special Juma’at prayer on June 5 and an interdenominational church service on June 7. A Democracy Day public lecture is scheduled for June 9, while youth- and women-focused programmes will hold on June 10. President Tinubu is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on June 12, with the celebration culminating in a Democracy Day Gala Night later that day.
