NRC Suspends Warri–Itakpe Train Operations Over Technical Concerns
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has temporarily suspended operations on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service following operational challenges and technical recommendations from its engineers.
The suspension, which took immediate effect, was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu. According to the NRC, the decision was taken in the interest of passenger safety and to allow for comprehensive operational assessments along the rail corridor.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation wishes to inform the general public and esteemed passengers that the Warri–Itakpe Train Service has been temporarily suspended due to operational exigencies and technical advice from our engineers,” the statement read.
The corporation explained that the temporary shutdown became necessary to ensure the continued safety, reliability, and efficiency of services on the standard gauge route. It noted that engineers and technical personnel would carry out critical assessments and maintenance procedures aimed at improving service delivery.
“The temporary suspension has become necessary to enable the Corporation to carry out critical operational assessments aimed at ensuring continued safety, reliability, and improved service delivery on the corridor,” the NRC added.
The development is expected to affect hundreds of passengers, traders, and civil servants who rely on the Warri–Itakpe rail service as a safer and more affordable alternative to road transportation, especially amid rising fuel costs and concerns over highway insecurity.
Despite the disruption, the corporation appealed to passengers and stakeholders for patience and understanding, assuring the public that efforts were ongoing to resolve the issues and restore operations as quickly as possible.
“The NRC regrets the inconvenience this development may cause passengers and other stakeholders, and assures the public that efforts are currently ongoing to resolve the issues within the shortest possible time,” the statement stated.
The corporation further assured intending travellers that updates regarding the resumption of services would be communicated before the end of the week.
“Passengers and intending travellers will be duly informed before the end of the week on the date for the resumption of normal train operations,” the statement concluded.
