Shocking! Breaking: Lagos Government Bans Transportation of Goods on Public Buses From June 1
The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on the transportation of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses across the state, with enforcement set to begin on June 1, 2026.
The directive was disclosed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.
According to LAMATA, the decision follows growing complaints from commuters and operational challenges caused by the increasing use of regulated buses for the movement of goods and bulky items.
The agency said the practice had negatively affected passenger comfort, safety, and efficient service delivery within the state’s public transport system.
The statement explained that the decision was reached after a strategic meeting between LAMATA and heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies.
At the meeting, stakeholders reportedly agreed that the practice must be halted and properly reorganised to ensure a balanced and sustainable transport system that protects commuters while supporting transport operators.
“LAMATA emphasised that the enforcement of the suspension will be strict and uncompromising. Any bus driver found violating the directive by conveying goods during the suspension period will face immediate dismissal and blacklisting,” the statement read.
The authority also warned that any ground staff or LAMATA personnel found aiding, permitting, or facilitating the loading of goods onto regulated buses at terminals or loading points would be summarily dismissed.
The agency stressed that there would be zero tolerance for non-compliance, adding that the government remained committed to restoring order, safety, and efficiency across the public transportation network.
LAMATA urged commuters, transport operators, terminal officials, and members of the public to comply fully with the directive and make alternative arrangements for the transportation of goods.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to providing Lagos residents with a safe, reliable, and commuter-friendly transport system.
