FG to Unveil Radio Station for Adult Education Nationwide

The Federal Government says it will soon launch a dedicated radio station to broadcast literacy, vocational, and non-formal education programmes for adult learners across Nigeria.

Dr John Edeh, Director of Literacy and Development at the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Saturday.

Edeh, who is currently overseeing the commission, said the initiative was approved by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, as part of efforts to expand access to learning, particularly in remote and underserved communities.

He explained that radio remains one of the most affordable and far-reaching platforms for delivering education to marginalised and hard-to-reach populations.

According to him, the planned station will broadcast literacy and vocational training content nationwide, with potential reach beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“We have already begun the implementation process with the National Commission for Nomadic Education, and approval has been granted by the Minister to ensure the station is established,” he said.

“With radio, we can reach every nook and cranny of the country. The station will also have broader coverage beyond Nigeria.”

He added that digital tools would also be integrated to ensure learners can access educational content wherever they are.

Edeh said the radio platform would be jointly used by the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), the National Commission for Nomadic Education, and other relevant agencies responsible for out-of-school education.

He explained that the shared structure would ensure coordinated delivery of lessons and wider reach.

“That radio will function as a non-formal education platform, and all three agencies will have access to broadcast lessons,” he said.

“There will be no community left out. Once broadcasting begins, the frequency will be made available so learners can tune in from anywhere.”

He added that the initiative is part of the government’s broader digital education strategy aimed at ensuring that no learner is excluded due to location or circumstance.
