‎Oyo Government Begins Desilting of Waterways to Prevent Flooding in Ibadan

‎The Oyo State Government has commenced the desilting of blocked waterways across the state, particularly in Ibadan, as part of efforts to prevent flooding during the ongoing rainy season.

‎The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Honorable Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Ibadan on the state government’s preparedness following flood warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for Oyo and several other states across the country.

‎Aderinto said the government had received reports indicating that some channels under the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP) required urgent desilting due to indiscriminate dumping of waste and the natural silting associated with construction activities.

‎According to him, the process of clearing the channels and evacuating waste has already commenced.

‎The commissioner also urged residents to desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels and waterways, warning that such acts contribute significantly to flooding and environmental hazards.
