Gunmen kill UNIBEN student, injure two others
A yet-to-be-identified student of the University of Benin was reportedly shot dead by suspected gunmen on Sunday night while driving out of the institution’s main gate at Ugbowo in his JLK Mercedes-Benz.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants, said to be masked, opened fire on the student at close range before fleeing the scene. The victim was believed to have completed an examination in the Political Science Department about an hour before the attack occurred.
Two other occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries during the incident and were rushed to the university’s health care centre for treatment.
A student who witnessed the incident said the attack appeared targeted, noting that the victim had little chance of survival after being shot at close range.
Operatives of the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters later arrived at the scene and evacuated the victim’s remains.
Speaking on the incident, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Emmanuel, stated that details surrounding the attack were still unclear, while the Edo State Police Command had yet to release an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Saturday, another student was reportedly chased with a machete around the Social Science Lecture Theatre area but escaped unharmed.
