Tinubu hails Fasoranti at 100, lauds lifelong service to Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, as he marks his 100th birthday on May 11, describing him as a towering figure of integrity, discipline, and national service.

In a personally signed statement issued on Saturday, Tinubu said his “joy knows no bounds” as Fasoranti reaches the centenary milestone, adding that the Yoruba leader deserves “all the encomiums that will come his way” for his contributions to Nigeria.

“My joy knows no bounds as we witness Pa Reuben Fasoranti attain the milestone age of 100 on May 11,” the President said.

He described Fasoranti as “a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation, and true leadership,” praising his lifelong commitment to principle-driven leadership and public service.

Tinubu also highlighted Fasoranti’s academic journey, noting his studies at the University College, Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), the University of Hull in the United Kingdom, and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.

The President further recalled his contributions to education, including his work as a teacher and founder of several institutions such as Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy, established in honour of his late wife.

On politics, Tinubu said Fasoranti distinguished himself as a disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and one of the last surviving Awoists, having served in the Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria.

He also noted Fasoranti’s tenure as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983, where he was praised for financial prudence and integrity in public service.

The President commended his role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, saying he was “one of the rallying voices against military dictatorship” and consistently advocated for the return of democratic governance.

Tinubu further described him as a key figure in the socio-political group Afenifere, noting that he emerged as its authentic leader following internal divisions after the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya.

He also recalled that Fasoranti survived an assassination attempt during the Abacha military era, describing him as resilient and steadfast in the face of adversity.

The President acknowledged personal tragedies in Fasoranti’s life, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019, noting that despite these losses, he “remained strong and committed to public service.”

Tinubu also referenced Fasoranti’s support during his presidential campaign, saying the elder statesman prayed for his success, which he said was fulfilled through his eventual election as President.

He concluded by thanking Fasoranti for his continued support for the Renewed Hope administration and prayed for his long life, good health, and continued service to the nation.
