A Carnival of Spirits Unleashed in Ibadan: Liberty Stadium Transforms Into Sacred Spectacle as 150 Masquerades Meet In One Place


‎The 2026 World Egungun Festival, which began yesterday in Ibadan, reached its grand finale today at the Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado, drawing large crowds and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.

‎The festival had earlier kicked off yesterday with a symposium at the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission Hall, Secretariat, where stakeholders emphasized the need to preserve and promote the Egungun tradition as a vital cultural asset.

‎Today’s grand finale featured captivating Egungun performances that thrilled residents and visitors alike.

‎The arena came alive with colourful masquerades, rhythmic drumming, and energetic dances, as attendees expressed excitement and pride in the rich cultural display.

‎Speaking at the event, Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leveraging culture and tourism as key drivers of economic growth, stressing that Yoruba heritage must not be allowed to go into extinction.

‎The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde, noted that the presence of diplomats documenting the event on video signaled the growing global recognition of the festival.

‎Also speaking, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, expressed gratitude to supporters and sponsors, noting that efforts are ongoing to secure UNESCO recognition for the festival.

‎The event was attended by The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, represented by the Asipa Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade; Top Government Officials, The Deputy Head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos, Mr. Simon Field, Sons and Daughters of Ibadan and Oyo State, and also featured over 150 masquerades from within and outside Nigeria, making it a vibrant celebration of heritage, unity, and cultural pride.
