No New Vehicle Tax Introduced, Says Nigeria Revenue Service
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has dismissed claims circulating online that the federal government has introduced a new tax on vehicles, describing the information as false and misleading.
The clarification follows a viral infographic alleging that all vehicle owners in Nigeria would be required to pay a new levy effective from July 1, 2026.
In a statement on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman on Media and Publicity, Dare Adekanmbi, said the message did not originate from the agency or any government institution.
According to him, the fabricated notice was designed to mislead the public, despite being styled with official-looking government insignia to appear authentic.
“The attention of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has been drawn to a viral infographic message claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a fresh vehicle tax on all registered vehicles effective from 1 July 2026,” the statement read.
Adekanmbi noted that the false message directed vehicle owners to make payments either online or through designated banks and agencies, and also cited an incorrect government website.
He stressed that no such policy had been introduced by the federal government or any of its agencies.
“The message, which was adorned with the federal government logo to give the appearance of authenticity, advises vehicle owners to make payments online or at approved banks and agencies,” he said.
“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the Service or any government agency.”
The agency urged Nigerians to disregard the viral content and avoid falling victim to misinformation campaigns targeted at confusing the public.
It advised citizens to rely strictly on official communication channels for accurate updates on tax policies, obligations, and government directives.
“Citizens are, therefore, advised to disregard the fabricated message designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” the statement added.
The NRS further encouraged taxpayers to verify any tax-related information through its verified platforms before taking action.
It reaffirmed its commitment to transparent tax administration and public enlightenment, noting that all legitimate fiscal policies would be properly communicated through appropriate government channels.
