CBN Raises Alarm as Fake Messages Spread & Cyber Fraudsters Target Nigerians

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised alarm over a wave of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications falsely claiming to come from the apex bank, warning that the scams are designed to mislead the public and steal personal information.

In a press release dated April 21, 2026, the bank said cybercriminals are circulating fake messages that push recipients to click dangerous links while spreading false claims about the institution’s leadership, licensing matters, and policy decisions.

The CBN warned that the scam campaign appears aimed at hacking personal accounts and creating confusion among Nigerians who may mistake the messages for official communication.

Authorities urged the public to avoid clicking suspicious links or sharing sensitive information on questionable websites.

The bank also advised citizens to verify all communications through its official website, www.cbn.gov.ng, and trusted media platforms.

The CBN further called on Nigerians to report any suspected fake websites, scam emails, or fraudulent messages to law enforcement agencies.

Reaffirming its position, the bank said it remains committed to protecting Nigeria’s financial system and is strengthening cybersecurity measures with relevant agencies to combat growing digital fraud threats.
