Aviation Minister Ends VIP Privileges at Airports, Toll Gates
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has ordered the suspension of Very Important Person (VIP) privileges at airport access gates as part of the government’s renewed push for a cashless payment system.
Keyamo made this announcement on Friday during an inspection visit to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where he assessed the implementation of the newly introduced hybrid payment system.
The minister stressed that the Federal Government remains committed to enforcing the cashless policy introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
According to him, the era of preferential treatment at airport toll points is over, as the practice has significantly affected government revenue.
“We must end VIP treatment here because nearly half of our revenue is lost through VIP waivers. In Abuja, everyone considers themselves a ‘big man.’ Almost everyone you meet carries a business card with ‘FG’ printed on it — whether SA, SSA, or some other title,” he said.
Keyamo reiterated that the government will proceed fully with the cashless system.
“There is no going back on the cashless policy. We are determined to go completely cashless. At the last Federal Executive Council meeting, Mr. President gave me a clear deadline to achieve full implementation.
“When the President pushes me, I will also push those under me. Before Mr. President considers removing me, I will ensure that those responsible for delays are also held accountable,” he added.
The minister explained that although the implementation was initially left to FAAN, he has now decided to take direct oversight of the process.
“Previously, FAAN handled the details of implementation, but as the minister, I take full responsibility. I cannot leave my fate in the hands of others. That is why I am here personally to monitor how the hybrid system is being implemented. However, this transitional system will not last long,” he said.
The Federal Government had earlier announced that a cashless payment system would take effect at Nigerian airports beginning March 1, 2026.
However, the policy was temporarily suspended following heavy traffic gridlock at airport toll gates shortly after its introduction.
