President Tinubu Invites Senators to Breakfast, Asks Them to Amend Constitution For Establishment of State Police
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday called on the leadership of the 10th Senate to initiate constitutional amendments that would provide a legal framework for the establishment of State Police as part of efforts to address insecurity across the country.
The President made the appeal during an interfaith breakfast with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to President Tinubu, the creation of State Police has become increasingly urgent in light of Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
He emphasized that decentralised policing would strengthen grassroots security, enhance states’ capacity to respond swiftly to threats within their jurisdictions, and complement the existing federal security architecture through intelligence-led, community-focused law enforcement.
“We are confronting terrorism, banditry, and insurgency. We must respond decisively and appropriately. I urge you, distinguished Senators, to begin considering how best to amend the Constitution to incorporate State Police, so we can better secure our country, reclaim our forests from criminal elements, and free our children from fear,” the President said.
President Tinubu also commended the cordial and productive relationship between the executive and the Senate, noting that national unity and cooperation are essential to overcoming terrorism and banditry.
“It is encouraging that we are working in harmony toward building a nation that continues to evolve—one that cares for its citizens and ensures their safety,” he stated.
The President expressed appreciation to the Senate for its steadfast support of his administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies and the implementation of tax reforms.
“The bold reforms we have undertaken would not have been possible without your collaboration and encouragement. Together, we are reformers. What we ended was monumental corruption within the subsidy regime. We chose not to perpetuate systemic corruption and foreign exchange arbitrage.
“Today, Nigeria is on a path of economic stability, and prosperity is within reach. We must remain diligent and committed. Your presence here today means a great deal to me,” he added.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio thanked President Tinubu for hosting the leadership of the Senate for the interfaith breaking of fast. He commended the President’s visionary leadership at a critical moment in the nation’s history, noting that the administration’s reforms have increased revenue allocations to sub-national governments, enabling greater investment in critical infrastructure.
The Senate President offered prayers for the success of the administration and for continued peace, unity, and prosperity in Nigeria.
