Federal Government Unveils National IDP Policy to Strengthen Education in Katsina & Zamfara States
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the National Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Policy alongside State Action Plans for Durable Solutions in Katsina State and Zamfara State, marking a significant step toward addressing displacement challenges across the country.
The launch ceremony, held on February 17, 2026, brought together government officials, development partners, and key stakeholders committed to restoring stability in affected communities.
The new policy reaffirms the government’s commitment to restoring dignity, stability, and opportunities for internally displaced persons (IDPs) nationwide.
It aims to provide a coordinated framework that supports long-term recovery while addressing immediate humanitarian needs, particularly in states heavily impacted by insecurity and displacement.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Said Ahmad, emphasized the central role of education in rebuilding lives and communities.
She highlighted the importance of inclusive learning systems designed to accommodate displaced children and youth, ensuring they are not left behind due to circumstances beyond their control.
The minister outlined key focus areas of the initiative, including teacher support, improved school safety measures, skills development, and expanded digital learning opportunities.
According to her, these interventions are critical to enabling displaced learners especially girls and other vulnerable groups to resume their education and build sustainable futures.
The policy launch also aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes human capital development and national cohesion.
Government officials reiterated that durable solutions must go beyond temporary relief, focusing instead on reintegration, economic empowerment, and long-term resilience for affected populations.
Stakeholders at the event commended the collaborative approach embedded in the State Action Plans, noting that coordination between federal and state authorities will be essential for successful implementation.
Development partners and civil society organizations pledged continued support to ensure measurable progress in education access and community stabilization.
With the unveiling of the National IDP Policy, the Federal Government has signaled a renewed determination to tackle displacement challenges comprehensively.
As implementation begins in Katsina and Zamfara, expectations are high that the initiative will serve as a model for other states, ultimately strengthening Nigeria’s response to internal displacement and fostering lasting peace and development.
