Federal Government Raises Alarm Over Illegal Recruitment of Nigerians Into Foreign Wars, Warns Travel Agencies
The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against falling victim to illegal recruitment schemes that lure citizens into participating in foreign armed conflicts.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the government expressed grave concern over what it described as rising and alarming cases of Nigerians being recruited under false pretences for combat roles abroad.
According to the Ministry, recent media investigations and security reports reveal that unsuspecting Nigerians have been targeted with promises of lucrative employment, security jobs, educational opportunities and migration incentives.
Many of the victims were reportedly misled, coerced into signing military service contracts, and eventually deployed to foreign combat zones.
The government disclosed that recruiters often dangle attractive offers such as high monthly salaries, sign-on bonuses and fast-tracked citizenship to entice young people.
In some cases, victims were compelled to sign contracts written in foreign languages without proper legal guidance, while their travel documents were allegedly confiscated upon arrival in destination countries.
Authorities also raised concerns about the role of intermediaries and agents who allegedly facilitate travel under tourist or other non-military visa categories, masking the true purpose of the trip.
The Ministry warned that such deceptive practices not only endanger lives but may also violate Nigerian and international laws governing mercenary activities and foreign enlistment.
The Federal Government unequivocally cautioned citizens against accepting any offer that involves participation in foreign armed conflicts outside approved governmental frameworks.
It stressed that Nigerians who choose to engage in such activities do so at their own risk, with potential legal and security consequences.
To tackle the growing threat, the government said it is engaging relevant domestic and international partners to investigate the developments and strengthen preventive measures. Nigerian missions abroad have been directed to enhance consular vigilance and provide timely advisory services to nationals.
The Ministry further called on parents, guardians, community leaders and educational institutions to sensitize young Nigerians about the dangers of deceptive foreign recruitment schemes.
Citizens were urged to verify overseas job or study opportunities through official government channels and report suspicious activities to appropriate authorities, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of its citizens at home and abroad.
