FG Begins Kara Bridge Repairs Tuesday, Warns Motorists of Delays
The Federal Government has announced that repair works on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway will commence on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and last for two weeks, with motorists and commuters warned to expect delays along the busy corridor.
The rehabilitation, which was earlier scheduled to begin in August, was suspended to allow for a review of the traffic management plan following concerns over the short notice given to road users.
The two week repair project, directed by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, involves the replacement of deteriorating expansion joints on the bridge. The intervention is aimed at improving road safety, strengthening the structural integrity of the bridge and ensuring smoother traffic flow along the strategic route.
The rehabilitation is expected to continue until September 22, 2026.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and other stakeholders, has warned motorists to prepare for lane restrictions, particularly during peak commuting periods.
TRACE Acting Commander, Mr A. Ojerinde, said a multi agency traffic management operation involving TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Nigeria Police Force would be deployed along the corridor throughout the rehabilitation period.
Ojerinde urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time and allow for additional travel time because of the anticipated disruptions.
He said, “Leave earlier than usual to accommodate expected travel delays. Remain patient and disciplined during the temporary restrictions.”
He added, “We hereby assure the public that security and traffic agencies will work to minimise disruptions and keep traffic moving safely throughout the duration of the project.
“The agency appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the motoring public and will continue to provide updates on the traffic situation as the project progresses.
“Please plan your journey. Drive safely. Obey traffic regulations.”
