983 Candidates Fail Law School Bar Resit as Council Releases Results

The Council of Legal Education has disclosed that 983 candidates failed the May 2026 Bar Final Resit Examination, representing 54.7 per cent of the 1,955 candidates who sat for the examination.

The council made this known in a public notice signed by its Secretary and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho, and released on Monday.

According to the notice, the results were approved during the council’s Third Quarter Hybrid Meeting held on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The council stated that out of the 1,955 candidates who participated in the examination, 885 candidates passed, while 55 obtained conditional passes. A total of 983 candidates failed the examination, while 32 candidates were absent and the results of 19 others were withheld.

The Council of Legal Education said the overall pass rate stood at 45.3 per cent, with 54.7 per cent of the candidates failing to attain the prescribed pass mark.

The notice stated, “The results recorded an overall pass rate of 45.3 per cent. 54.7 per cent of the candidates did not attain the prescribed pass mark.”

Meanwhile, the Council of Legal Education has also released a list of 122 universities approved to offer Law in Nigeria as of August 2026.

The council warned prospective students against enrolling in Law programmes operated by unaccredited institutions, stressing that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws programme.

It further cautioned that students admitted into unapproved Law programmes would not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School, a requirement for those seeking to proceed to professional legal training and eventual qualification to practise law in Nigeria.

The release of the approved university list is therefore expected to guide prospective Law students, parents and other stakeholders in making informed decisions when selecting institutions for legal education.
