Osun to Probe Alleged Extrajudicial Killings After Governorship Poll — Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has announced plans to constitute an independent commission of inquiry immediately after Saturday’s governorship election to investigate reported cases of extrajudicial killings and other acts of violence recorded during the election period.

Adeleke disclosed this on Friday while addressing journalists in Osogbo. His speech was read by the state Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi.

The governor expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in election-related violence, stressing that political differences should never result in the loss of lives.

According to him, the commission will be constituted on Monday, August 17, to investigate all reported killings and acts of violence connected with the election period.

He said the commission would establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and recommend appropriate measures to ensure that anyone found responsible was brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation, position or influence.

Adeleke also assured residents that the state government would establish a framework to support and compensate families of victims of the violence, adding that the memories of those who lost their lives would be appropriately honoured.

He said, “The election will come and go, but we will remain one people. We owe the dead justice, their families compassion, and the people of Osun a peaceful future.”

The governor’s announcement comes amid concerns over alleged killings and other violent incidents reported in parts of Osun State in the months leading to the August 15 governorship election.

He urged residents to remain peaceful and assured them that the government would pursue justice and accountability in the aftermath of the election.
