‎Education Stakeholders Call For Swift Implementation of Federal Government’s Reusable Textbook Policy

‎Stakeholders in the education sector have called on the Federal Government to fast-track the implementation of its newly introduced policy on the use of reusable textbooks in schools.

‎Recall that the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, had said the policy is designed to allow siblings to share textbooks, significantly reduce recurring educational expenses for parents, and minimize waste within the school system.

‎As Nigerians entered a new year, calls for the implementation of the Policy have intensified across the country as parents lament economic hardship and multiple payments for their children’s learning materials.

‎Last year, the Federal Government formally ended the one-student-one-textbook practice in Nigeria’s education sector, replacing it with a policy that promotes the use of durable, reusable textbooks.

‎Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaba Sai’d, explained that the initiative aims to ease the financial burden on parents while promoting sustainability in schools.

‎Under the new policy, textbooks will be standardized and produced to last between four and six years.

‎The policy also prohibits the bundling of disposable workbooks and restricts the number of approved textbooks per subject and grade level.

‎A cross-section of parents who spoke with NewsRegister expressed mixed reactions to the policy.

‎While many described it as timely, given the prevailing economic hardship in the country, they stressed the need for effective monitoring teams to ensure strict compliance by schools.

‎Speaking on the development, a school proprietor, Mr. Olaoye Taoheed, emphasized the importance of clearly defined guidelines to ensure uniform implementation across schools, noting that consistency would be critical to the policy’s success.

‎An education analyst, Mr. Taiwo Ogunbode, also welcomed the initiative, describing it as a practical response to current economic realities and rising education costs.

‎Overall, parents and education experts have applauded the policy but underscored the need for clear implementation frameworks and robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance and achieve its intended impact nationwide.
